Rising Interest Rates, Energy Market Tensions and Resilient Equity Markets<\/strong><\/p>\n

September proved to be a challenging month for global financial markets, marked by renewed inflationary pressures, tighter monetary policies and persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The sharp rise in bond yields weighed on several asset classes, while equity markets displayed mixed performance, supported primarily by solid corporate earnings and the technology sector.<\/p>\n

Central Banks: Higher Interest Rates for Longer<\/strong><\/p>\n

Major central banks maintained a restrictive monetary policy stance in response to renewed inflationary pressures, largely driven by rising energy prices.<\/p>\n

The European Central Bank (ECB) raised its key interest rates by 25 basis points, bringing the deposit facility rate to 2.50%. A few days later, the Federal Reserve followed with a similar increase, lifting the federal funds target range to 3.75%\u20134.00%.<\/p>\n

In Switzerland, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) kept its policy rate unchanged at 0%, maintaining a more accommodative monetary stance than other major central banks. Relatively subdued domestic inflation allowed the SNB to adopt a wait-and-see approach despite global energy-related price pressures. Widening interest rate differentials also contributed to a weakening of the Swiss franc against major currencies.<\/p>\n

These developments highlight a growing divergence in monetary policies: while the ECB and the Fed remain focused on containing inflation, the SNB continues to maintain more supportive conditions for the domestic economy.<\/p>\n

Fixed income was among the asset classes most affected during the month. Higher energy prices and expectations of further monetary tightening led to a significant increase in government bond yields, putting downward pressure on bond prices, particularly at the longer end of the maturity spectrum.<\/p>\n

Rising energy costs represent a significant source of uncertainty, particularly for economies that rely heavily on energy imports, such as those in Europe. Even traditionally defensive sectors, including utilities, have been affected by higher interest rates and the potential for regulatory intervention in energy markets.<\/p>\n

Outlook: Prudence and Selectivity in a Market Offering Opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n

Looking ahead, we believe financial markets will continue to be shaped by inflation trends, central bank decisions and geopolitical developments.<\/p>\n

Despite recent market turbulence, the outlook also presents constructive elements. Higher bond yields are creating attractive investment opportunities, while solid corporate earnings and structural technological developments continue to support the medium- to long-term prospects for equity markets.<\/p>\n
